What to Expect on Your Very First Driving Lesson

  • Learn the controls and get familiar with the car
  • Practise basic driving on quiet roads
  • Build road awareness and stay safe
  • Get personalised feedback from your instructor

During Your First Lesson, You Will Practise:

  • Moving off safely
  • Stopping smoothly
  • Steering control
  • Approaching basic junctions
  • Clutch control (manual learners)
  • Gear changes (manual) or correct use of the gears (automatic)
  • Smooth acceleration and braking

Understanding the MSPSL Routine

You will also learn and begin using the MSPSL routine:

Mirror – Signal – Position – Speed – Look

  • Mirror – Check your mirrors to understand what is around you
  • Signal – Let other road users know your intentions
  • Position – Move into the correct position on the road
  • Speed – Adjust your speed appropriately
  • Look – Make final checks before turning or changing direction

This routine helps you stay safe, organised, and confident at junctions, roundabouts, and when turning.

Don’t worry about making mistakes — this lesson is about learning, not perfection.

  • Practising Test Routes: Familiar roads, roundabouts, junctions, and local hazards.
  • Advanced Manoeuvres: Pulling Up on the Right and Reversing, Parallel Parking, Bay Parking, Emergency Stop.
  • Emergency Skills: Controlled stops and reacting safely to sudden hazards.
  • Refining Awareness: Mirrors, blind spots, lane discipline, and anticipating other road users.
  • Driving in Different Conditions: Busier roads, minor rural roads, and dual carriageways.
  • Instructor Feedback: Tips to polish skills and final guidance before your practical test.

Goal: Build consistency, confidence, and readiness for your DVSA driving test!

Benefits of Practising Your Local Test Routes

  1. Familiarity Reduces Anxiety
    • Knowing the roads, junctions, and typical hazards on your test route helps reduce nerves on test day.
    • Confidence comes from anticipating what to expect, so you can focus on your driving rather than worrying about getting lost.
  2. Improved Knowledge of Local Traffic Patterns
    • You’ll understand common traffic flows, congestion points, and tricky junctions.
    • Helps you make smoother, safer decisions in real-time.
  3. Practice Common Manoeuvres in Context
    • Test routes often include manoeuvres such as bay parking, reversing, parallel parking or emergency stops.
    • Practising them on the actual roads helps you perform confidently under exam conditions.
  4. Better Hazard Perception
    • Repeatedly driving the route improves your ability to spot hazards early.
    • You’ll learn to anticipate hazards like pedestrians, cyclists, parked cars, or junctions with limited visibility.
  5. Time Management and Route Planning
    • You’ll develop a sense of timing for manoeuvres, lane positioning, and turning.
    • Helps ensure smooth driving and adherence to speed limits and road rules.
  6. Fewer Surprises on Test Day
    • You’ll know what to expect from roundabouts, traffic lights, one-way systems, and local driving quirks.
    • Reduces the chance of mistakes caused by unfamiliarity rather than lack of skill.
  7. Boosts Overall Confidence
    • Confidence is key to passing the practical test. Familiarity with the route reduces stress and helps you drive naturally.

Tip: Even if you don’t know the exact test route, practising the types of roads, junctions, and manoeuvres you’re likely to encounter locally is extremely valuable.
